Smara is an easy to use interface designed to provide support to caretakers and facilitate important family interaction with the goal of improving the quality of life in Alzheimer's patients. Smara targets four significant problems in particular and provides an innovative, and respective approach to each one.
Smara allows patients to store memories virtually as a photo, video, text, or audio recording, and create timelines with the memories. We call this Storyboard. Storyboard allows patients to reflect on their life and allow families to add their own memories to the timeline.
The second feature is integrated facial recognition to identify important people. Because patients often can't recognize relevant people and recall their role and relationship, Smara makes it a matter of raising a phone or tablet to let the technology do the work for them.
Third is internalized scheduling to help make sure patients are staying healthy and on top of their day-to-day lives. Because patients often forget to eat, drink, or attend their daily activities, Smara uses push notifications to constantly be reminding patients of their schedule and checking in to make sure they are on track.
Lastly, Smara uses Brain Games to help improve patient's memory and overall health. Particularly in cases of the early-onset of Alzheimer's, studies show that playing games that stimulate the mind can help to mitigate the effects of the disease.
