SMART MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS (SMS) is an independent spin-out research and consulting company from the University of Nottingham specialising in smart technologies for manufacturing. Established in 2019, it builds upon the extensive expertise of the University of Nottingham's Institute for Advanced Manufacturing in delivering large national and EU funded projects. The members of the team have led and contributed to a large number of FP6, FP7, Horizon and Clean Sky 2 funded projects including the recent projects FP7 FRAME, FP7 FoF PRIME, H2020 FoF OPTIMISED, H2020 FoF MC-SUITE, H2020 CONNECTED FACTORIES, Clean Sky 2 ASTRAL, Clean Sky 2 VADIS.
SMS is a unique technology-focussed company that encompasses a multidisciplinary team of internationally leading established academics, high-quality research staff and experienced industrial practitioners including aerostructure design and tooling engineers with extensive experience in the aerospace sector. SMS addresses a specific gap in the market for integration solutions and consulting services in highly agile manufacturing systems. Core service provision includes industrial translation of research expertise into high TRL applications, industrial research and development, programme management, training and organisation of events and seminars including the International Precision Assembly Seminar. In addition, SMS has an established supplier network of Tier 1 companies and component suppliers.
SMS translates the specific expertise of the Centre for Aerospace Manufacturing (CAM) at the University of Nottingham - an international centre of excellence in aerospace assembly systems and smart factory technologies - into industrial applications. The members of the SMS research and development team have delivered projects via CAM to a number of key industrial partners including GKN Aerospace, GE Aviation, BAE Systems, Airbus Helicopters and Leonardo S.p.A.
