About Smartrawl
Smartrawl is a device that tackles wasteful fisheries discards and bycatch. The device is made up of a stereo camera to identify species and size: AI algorithms for selective and targeted catch retention and a patented gate system designed to retain only desired catch, release other species. Smartrawl can be easily retrofitted into the nets of vessels with no cables needed. Smartrawl is a Fisheries Innovation and Sustainability (FIS) project and is supported by DEFRA and the UK Seafood Innovation Fund. Smartrawl is based out of Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh in the Lyell Centre and the National Robotarium.
