SmartSwitch is a Bank of Botswana accredited Payment Service Provider. SmartSwitch was founded in 2006 with the aim of utilising technology to deliver an alternative method of banking that would allow financial institutions to provide a wide range of services to all Batswana regardless of their financial position and geographical location.
The concept lies in using smart cards, point of sale devices and financial institutions (which hold the real money) to “bring banking to the people” via a network of retail stores.
With 1067 merchants in over 240 villages both rural and suburban and all towns and cities covered, SmartSwitch has the greatest reach in the country.
The technology distinguishes itself from an array of supposed solutions by integrating biometrics (fingerprints identification) into the system as well as by handling both on-line and off-line transactions, making our solution perfect for African countries which often experience downtime especially in rural areas where connectivity can be erratic.
