SMMT Online (Pty) Ltd was founded in 2006. This 100% black owned company offers specialised services in the Information Communications Technology (ICT) domain/discipline. As a service based company, SMMT online provides professional and innovative services in the following areas; • Planning and scoping of ICTE network infrastructure; • Scoping and Planning of Data and Operating Centres; • Systems Integration; • Enterprise development (open source included) • Maintenance and Operations of ICTE networks; • Network support and monitoring Flagship project/s: Gauteng online The Gauteng province is the economic heart of sub-Saharan Africa. National and Provincial government has recognised the impact that the province could make in catapulting Africa into the knowledge economy. The Gauteng Provincial Government Department of Education (GDE) has aligned itself with National Government’s goals to build a strong human resources capacity. The GDE, through the Gauteng Online (GOL) programme, plans to bridge the digital divide by providing all learners with ICT access by 2013 through the establishment of a schools computer network. The stated end-goals of the project are to provide a catalyst for positive economic growth, ICT-based innovation, and integration of the learning curricula with ICT. The project involves: • installation of 25 computers and related enterprises at public schools on Gauteng; • to provide training to the learners and educators; and • operational and technical support. The strategy is to ensure access to ICT without the burden of owning and managing the infrastructure the longer-term, ensuring that the focus is on delivering quality ICT-integrated curricula.
