Established in 1980, the Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC) is an independent statutory body that provides impartial advice on social security and related matters. It scrutinises most of the complex secondary legislation that underpins the social security system. It also undertakes research as part of its independent work programme which aims to:
• provide an evidence base for our work, improving members’ ability to scrutinise regulations and
provide credible independent and impartial advice to ministers
• add value to the debate on a topic that is of current interest to government or a broad range of our
stakeholders
• stimulate debate or discussion of a specific topic
• introduce new thinking on data
