Space exploration has been accelerated and democratized in recent years as breakthroughs have made space missions cheaper and more accessible than ever. Many of these missions involve building large structures like the Lunar Gateway, giant satellites, or what is necessary for Moon/Mars habitation. These structures are too large to be launched as a single payload, requiring in-space construction. The ability to weld these structures together in space would allow for strong, air-tight seals and easy construction of many new structures – which the solutions available today cannot accomplish. As a solution to this problem, SPACECO is developing a cold welding method for space construction applications.
