The SPARK project works to strengthen African technology ecosystems to support climate-smart, gender-responsive and research-based innovations.
African climate tech startups face significant challenges, including high costs, long investment cycles, and a lack of specialised support. These barriers hinder their ability to develop impactful, market-ready solutions for CO2 adaptation and other climate issues. Additionally, there is a disconnect between startups and applied research, compounded by unfavourable legal frameworks.
Implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), SPARK adopts a comprehensive approach to address these challenges.
We facilitate collaborations between startups and research institutions, accelerate the development of market-ready products, and empower innovation hubs, especially those led by women, to ensure equitable resource access. SPARK also focuses on improving access to capital through innovative blended financing instruments, creating a robust support system that drives growth, gender equality, and sustainable development.
