Sparks for Success provides music therapy services to students in Central Texas who have experienced trauma from parental incarceration, homelessness, and other challenging circumstances. This community often faces many unique challenges, including disenfranchised grief, trauma from parental separation, mental health issues, increased financial burden and lack of community resources. There are approximately 1.5 million children with an incarcerated parent in the state of Texas.
We are committed to early intervention to end generational incarceration and poverty as we encourage our students to learn essential life skills that will help them stay in school, graduate and become productive citizens in our community. We partner with board-certified music therapists and Title 1 schools to provide music therapy for these often marginalized and underserved groups of children.
Music therapy transcends ethnic, cultural, geographic and socio-economic barriers, enabling us to reach a wide array of students from various backgrounds. It is also fun—encouraging students to sing, dance and play musical instruments throughout their sessions. Through music therapy, students practice verbal and non-verbal expression, social and communication skills, self-regulation and healthy coping strategies to improve mental well-being.
We provide these services at no cost to our schools or the students they serve. As a result, donations are crucial to help us reach as many children as possible.
