Hyperspectral sensing or infrared spectroscopy is a rapid, non-destructive method to identify the mineralogy in samples (e.g. drill core, chips and powders) with minimal handling and no (or minimal) sample preparation. Infrared spectroscopy is sensitive to the molecular bonds in a minerals lattice and has proved particularly invaluable for identifying fine grained, hydrothermal alteration minerals that are visually indistinct. Results include continuous, objective, systematically generated down-hole logs of infrared-active mineralogy and associated parameters (e.g. crystallinity, intensity, relative abundance and compositional substitution) to characterise the regolith, host rock and alteration associated with mineral deposits. The mineralogically characterised drill core results assist in uncovering mineralogical vectors to ore and furthering the geological understanding of a prospect or deposit.
