SPLLP has two Divisions : Production Scope (Production Services Division) and Suitable Pictures (Original Content Division) Alan McAlex founded Suitable Pictures in 2019 with a commitment to fostering both established and emerging voices. The company thrives on innovative, cinematic storytelling, crafting hyperlocal narratives with universal resonance. A prime example is Alan’s latest project, Boong, a Manipuri-language film that premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). In 2024, two of his projects premiered at Cannes. Santosh (Un Certain Regard), produced by BBC and BFI, was also selected as the UK’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars. Sister Midnight (Directors’ Fortnight), produced by Film4 and BFI, was equally well-received. Both films were nominated for the 2025 BAFTA Awards. Earlier in his career, Alan produced Liar’s Dice (2014), which premiered at Sundance, became India’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, and won National Awards for Best Actress and Best Cinematography. His 2015 film Killa (The Fort) won the Crystal Bear at Berlinale and was released in India, France (La Forteresse), and Sweden (Fortet). He later produced Nil Battey Sanatta (2016), Moothon (2019), and Fire in the Mountains (2021), all of which received critical and commercial acclaim. Moothon premiered at TIFF 2019, opened MAMI, and was named one of the Top 25 Malayalam Films of the Decade in one of the most prominent Indian Publications (The Hindu). Fire in the Mountains debuted at Sundance 2021 and won the Gender Sensitivity Award at the Critics’ Choice Awards 2024. Expanding into episodic content, Suitable Pictures co-produced A Suitable Boy with BBC Studios, directed by Mira Nair, which premiered on Netflix.
