Sport Tech Learn (STL) specialises in designing new integrated, hands-on, curriculum, and resources that engage students in STEM and literacy, using sport as the vehicle. All STL programs have suggested links to the Australian Curriculum, Assessment, and Reporting Authority (ACARA) standards, creating an adaptable and reliable resources for teachers, schools and parents.
The key design principals are:
• Interactivity through face-to-face, online, and real-world activities.
• Integration of digital and multimodal literacies.
• Building on students’ funds of knowledge.
• Staged hands-on activities developing student confidence and autonomy.
What does Sport Tech Learn (STL) stand for and why:
S = Sport.
Australian kids' love for sport is evident in statistics such as in 2017, 3.5 million (74%) participated in sport or physical activity outside of school hours (Australian Sports Commission 2018).
T = two important meanings.
1. Technology, where applicable the program incorporates technological aspects and links to real-world applications.
2. Technical, giving students the ability to explore the technical aspects of sports they are passionate about and make direct connections with STEM concepts.
L = Learn
STL has created resources draw upon the research showing that deeper stimulation, understanding, and greater retention for students can be achieved by harnessing a student’s passion and making a direct connection with this passion and new concepts (Prince & Felder 2006). STL embeds this pedagogy into all their programs, with the goal of creating lasting memories and stories of STEM success for students through lessons that link directly to real-life concepts and sport. #STEMories
Sport Tech Learn partners with schools, parents, and communities to make a change in STEM education. Our key focus is to encourage minority groups such as Indigenous and female students to have the confidence and knowledge to pursue a career pathway in STEM.
