Sport Policy Unit - Manchester Metropolitan University

The Sport Policy Unit (SPU) is situated in the Department of People and Performance, Faculty of Business and Law at Manchester Metropolitan University. Twenty full-time staff – led by Prof Jonathan Grix, Head of SPU make up the team. SPU constitutes a significant part of the recent ambitious, university-wide investment in the academic study of sport. Key staff in SPU include Prof Mark James, an expert in Sports Law, Prof Larissa Davies, expert in Applied Sport Economics, Dr Nicolas Scelles, Dr Paul Widdop, and Dr Paul Michael Brannagan, readers in Sport Management, Dr Maurizio Valenti, Dr Qi Peng, Dr Dom Conricode, Dr Seth Perkin, Dr Lorraine Bedwell, Dr Anne Thompson, Dr Swarali Patil, Dr Ryuta Yoda, Dr Harish Kumar, Dr Abdullah Faruq, Dr Alessio Norrito, Dr Marianna Pavan, Catherine Elliott, Mike Griffiths, and Billy Fleury. Our staff are truly international with colleagues from France, Italy, Japan, India, Bangladesh, and China. Our group is comprised of scholars working on a range of topics in management, policy, and socio-cultural issues in sport. In conducting cutting-edge research, the members of the SPU are adding valuable contributions to our understanding of the sporting landscape in a range of disciplines. The Unit collaborates with several partners to deliver academic, societal, and economic impact. These partnerships include local, national and international collaborations such as the Manchester City Council, Sports England, the Premier League, the Rugby Football League, FIFA, and the International Olympic Committee. Furthermore, the Sport Policy Unit collaborates with serval universities nationally and internationally. We offer two core undergraduate programmes (Sport Business Management and Sport Marketing Management), two postgraduate taught programmes (Sport Business, Management and Policy and Global Online Sport Business, Management and Policy) and a wide-ranging doctoral programme.
