Founded in 1974 by the late Mrs. Joan De Mel and incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1986, Sri Lanka Sumithrayo is a government-approved charity dedicated to providing emotional support to those at risk of suicide. As a registered member of Befrienders Worldwide, we operate as a non-political, non-religious organization, committed to fostering a society where individuals can openly express their feelings without fear or prejudice, understand and respect the emotions of others, and work toward reducing suicide rates. With 10 centers across the country, a Rural Programme, and an Outreach Unit, we offer face-to-face, phone, and email support to help individuals develop coping skills, manage stress, and navigate life’s challenges. Our services include befriending at institutions, supporting farming communities facing economic hardships, assisting drug dependents and their families, and conducting awareness programs on suicide prevention.
