About Surgical and Translational Research Centre

The Surgical and Translational Research (STaR) Centre is based at New Zealand's top-ranked university, The University of Auckland. Surgical disease encompasses many non-communicable diseases and cancers, an estimated 30% of the global burden of disease can be attributed to surgically treatable conditions. The fundamental scientific underpinnings of surgery are being revolutionised as we gain insight into the causes of disease on a genomic and molecular level. The STaR Centre draws together 4 related research platforms that are committed to collaborative, cross-disciplinary and translational research, covering the disciplines of molecular science, engineering science, clinical science and population science. What makes us unique? • Focus on surgical disease • Commitment to bench-to-bedside translational research • Cross-disciplinary expertise - basic, clinical, engineering and population science • University / Hospital partnership (Auckland Academic Health Alliance) • Industry partnerships • Spans inception to commercialization • Investigator initiated and company-sponsored clinical research
