About Research Alliance for Disaster and Risk Reduction (RADAR)
RADAR is a teaching and research centre based within the School for Climate Studies at Stellenbosch University. Our work starts from the assumption that disasters are not inevitable and can be prevented by tackling the development problems that underlie them. We focus on understanding the risk environment locally and on the continent, the factors driving the risk of disasters and how to address these, as well as strengthening capacity to reduce risk and respond more effectively to disasters when they occur. We have been undertaking risk related research for more than a decade and have an established track record of inter-disciplinary disaster risk research. RADAR is well known for its outreach activities and the work it does among local communities, particularly informal settlements and other low-income areas. We also offer a Postgraduate Diploma and MPhil programme, and short courses for professionals in the field.
