STEPS is a research programme with a vision of a future society in which plastics are sustainably developed, produced, used and recycled in a circular economy.
It ran from 2016 - 2024 and was funded by Mistra, The Swedish foundation for strategic environmental research.
Its work on sustainable plastics was divided into three work packages, where researchers and industry collaborate: green building blocks, bio based polymers, and plastic governance.
During the programme's eight years in existence, researchers have published seminal work on plastic pathways to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable use of plastics.
STEPS three pathways
Smart use: reduce the use of unnecessary plastic, use the right plastic for the right purpose and replace plastic with more resource-efficient materials when appropriate.
Renewable raw materials: reduce the amount of plastic that is made from fossil raw materials and instead use renewable raw materials such as starch, sugar, cellulose or in some cases carbon dioxide.
Circular systems: go from a linear and short-lived use of plastic to more circular processes where the plastic remains in the system through reuse and recycling.
