The Department of Energy defines a Microgrid as "a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources with clearly defined electrical boundaries that act as a single, controllable entity with respect to the grid having the ability to connect and disconnect from the grid to operate in both grid-connected or island mode." The original goal for the Stone Edge Farm Microgrid Project was to reduce the farm’s carbon footprint by 50%. Within the first year of construction, we surpassed this goal. Currently, our goal is to discover how far below zero carbon emissions we can actually achieve. The future can have reliable, sustainable, and secure energy for all.
