Never before in our history, has a first response to a pandemic, been able to be non-pharmaceutical and be so effective. We were not powerless until the drugs came, until the solution was clear, until the vaccines were produced. People ask how long we will be in lock down or in emergency ‘position’ almost forgetting that our purpose with this first response is to slow the effects of this pandemic until we can immunise against it. We have seen governments respond in mere weeks, healthcare services and schools respond in days and our public services decide every day to do something to the greater benefit of others and not themselves. As Doctors we are all too often reminded of how very fragile the human body can be, but we are constantly awed in the power of the human spirit. As doctors, nurses or healthcare workers we can only do so much, spread our influence so far, see only so few. It has been an unbelievable experience to have our reach extended by volunteers from all around the world. We are grateful to every one and are more than happy to honour their contributions here.
