About Stroke Association of Kenya (SAoK)

The Stroke Association of Kenya (SAoK) is a survivor led, member driven not for profit organization at the forefront of redefining stroke care in Kenya and beyond. With a bold vision of "Building a Global Survivor Led Stroke Care System," SAoK pioneers community based, scalable models that transform stroke prevention, emergency care, rehabilitation, and policy into a system that puts survivors and caregivers at the center of the solution. Founded on the principle of authentic survivor leadership, SAoK is uniquely positioned to tackle one of the most devastating and overlooked health crises in Africa. By leveraging lived experience and combining it with clinical, policy, and community innovation, SAoK is transforming Kenya's stroke response from fragmented care into a coordinated, high-impact stroke care ecosystem. Through its 5 pillar transformation strategy spanning awareness and prevention, emergency stroke care, rehabilitation, policy advocacy, and evidence-based research, SAoK is delivering replicable, community-integrated stroke care models across all 47 counties. These models are aligned with the WHO Global Action Plan for Noncommunicable Diseases and the Angels Initiative, making SAoK a strategic partner in Africa’s NCD and disability response. With international accreditation targets, regional training hubs, and data-driven stroke registries, SAoK is not just addressing stroke as a medical condition but as a social, economic, and development challenge. Its survivor-led governance structure ensures that stroke survivors are not just beneficiaries, but decision-makers and advocates shaping national and global stroke policy. At its core, SAoK is reimagining what is possible in stroke care, mobilizing communities, influencing systems, and restoring dignity and independence to survivors and families. As a global thought leader from the Global South, SAoK’s work is now shaping conversations around disability inclusion, health equity, and survivor-led systems.
