Sustainability Cell, IIT Bombay

We are a student-led body that works to foster sustainability at IIT Bombay through technical, policy, and behavioral changes. We serve as the hub for all the institute's sustainable development innovations, research, and teachings. We are committed to addressing some of the most pressing sustainability challenges facing our planet, including climate change, waste reduction, and renewable energy. From executing institute-wide projects - like the 3-bin segregation project - to organising competitions pertaining to sustainability - like the pan India competition, Airathon - we are involved in all things sustainable at IIT Bombay. Two of our most noteworthy projects are the Institute Sustainabilty Report (ISR) and The Green Cup. The annual Institute Sustainability Report - a first of its kind - showcases the institute’s sustainability practices and catalogs all student activities, R&D, and policy interventions contributing to sustainable development, measuring and reporting impact across food & water systems, electricity consumption patterns, transport, biodiversity, and the UN SDGs. Our flagship event - the Green Cup - is proposed as an annual cup competition hosted by Sustainability Cell, IIT Bombay which leverages the competitive spirit among hostels to drive sustainability and facilitate behavioral changes among the students. For example, the competition rewards hostels for reducing their energy consumption, waste production and segregation, and sustainability-themed events conducted. We believe behavioural change is one of the pivotal aspects to achieve sustainability as an institute, and our aim is not to have a few people practising sustainability perfectly, but to have everyone contribute to a greener future. The Green Cup is a result of the same philosophy.
