"SUSTINENTIA," derived from the Latin term for sustainability, epitomises a concept that has permeated discourse and praxis within diverse sectors of society. Sustainability, as a term, is commonly associated with activities, decisions, or other elements that are deemed to be part of sustainable development. Examples encompass "sustainable projects" or "sustainable design." Moreover, one may evaluate sustainability in various contexts, discerning whether something is sustainable. Environmental and social sustainability expressions are employed to elucidate the facet of sustainable development in focus. When inquiring about the meaning of “sustainability”, the preponderance of responses would likely encompass facets such as recycling, fossil fuels, food waste, electric vehicles, and paper and plastic consumption, principally matters germane to the environment. However, social sustainability has recently gained traction within the colloquial vernacular. This term, rooted in sociology, addresses relationships and conditions among individuals. Nonetheless, the practical implication of social sustainability remains multifaceted and lacks a unanimous definition. The challenge resides in realising that these distinctions become inconsequential for something to be sustainable. Sustainability is a state that a society either achieves or fails to achieve. It is untenable to advocate environmental sustainability whilst opposing social sustainability, as they are both facets of the overarching concept of sustainability. The term “sustainability” can be traced back to the Brundtland Commission’s report, “Our Common Future” (1987). We must transform our fundamental cognitive approach to forge a sustainable future.
