Industrial -Urban Symbiosis: the necessary step to achieve a real circular economy.
The impact of climate change has pushed countries and organizations worldwide to look for greener energy as well as industrial and everyday life solutions. In reaction to linear behavior (extract, use, waste…), companies and public organizations should learn from the closed loops of natural ecosystems. This is closely linked with ideas regarding the circular economy. In this context, the EU-funded SYMSITES project aims at developing new technologies and solutions based on the Industrial and Urban symbiosis concept, for local and regional collaborations among diverse actors (Citizens, Municipalities and Enterprises) and sectors improving the sustainability of the use of industrial and societal resources starting from wastewater and waste materials and evaluating its impact at a social, economic and environmental level.
SYMSITES main asset lies in the implementation of the regional urban-industrial symbiosis in four European regions, different in socioeconomic and environmental aspects, from the north of Denmark, through the center of Austria, and the south of Spain and Greece.
