@Syrian-Canadians is an Instagram-based social club for Syrians in Canada. It started out as a place to highlight the lives of everyday Syrians through profile features. Once or twice a week, we’d introduce someone through a post that includes a few photos of them along with a short bio that tells us what part of Syria they’re from, their field of study/work, hobbies, interests, and anything else they’d like to share. Group followers are free to engage and connect with the person being featured that day.
While the page still features followers regularly, our main initiative has shifted to strengthening bonds between Syrians through event planning and in-person connections. We aim to make a positive difference in each other’s lives by networking, developing relationships and having a jolly good time! Many of the regular members have developed wonderful friendships and created great memories.

@Syrian-Canadians was created in May 2021 as a virtual meeting spot to connect Syrians across Canada. Its founder, Safana Zahili, a Damascus-born food blogger living in Canada since 1991, grew increasingly disillusioned with the divisive and fractured Syrian community in the GTA. She sought a neutral space where she could meet likeminded Syrians in a safe, welcoming environment. As most spaces were understandably Arabic-only and thus exclusive, she created a space where English-speaking Syrians could connect and celebrate their culture.
@Syrian-Canadians now boasts nearly 1,600 Syrians from across Canada.
When lockdown finally lifted in June 2021, we began organizing events in major cities across Canada, including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Vancouver. We organize activities like nature hikes, movie nights, concerts, kayaking, shisha nights, dinners, brunches, road trips, bowling and anything else that promotes social mingling and allows people to get together, network, chit-chat and get to know one another.
