Systempunkt was founded in the pursuit of a publication for young marginalized individuals to share their stories and avoid exploitation from publications whose sole aims were to increase website traffic. In the process, we hope to empower these individuals and force much-needed discussions onto the center stage, the first step in changing minds and creating political change. Quickly, we began to think bigger. National publications like the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal failed to attract and engage youth to the news. These publications failed to market themselves to younger populations, failing to use social media effectively to improve engagement. When observing the demographics of the editorial boards of these publications, which comprise older populations, it is not difficult to see why such failures persist. These publications have no interest in serving younger populations, as they have already found stability in their large, established older audiences. Moreover, the journalistic integrity of these publications is oftentimes called into question as propaganda-riddled journalism forces individuals to ponder whether they serve public or private interests. Cases like CNN host Chris Cuomo’s role as an advisor to brother and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s sexual harassment allegations emphasize the disturbing direction that influential news sources founded upon old money and nepotism are willing to go to protect their own. Thus, younger populations must take initiative to create a publication that engages and serves our demographic. Now, Systempunkt publishes nontraditional stories to engage young generations abandoned by traditional newspapers. Emphasizing dynamic web content and interactive data visualizations, we will deliver vital information to young people ready to spark change.
