台權會成立於戒嚴時期的1984年12月10日（國際人權日）。台灣因長期戒嚴，未能落實基本人權保障。成立初期，我們以推動民主改革，確保各項政治與公民權利為要務。近年來，台權會工作已廣及各種人權議題，主要工作包含：針對國家嚴重侵害人民基本權利之重大個案，進行調查並提供具體協助、引進國際人權法令最新資訊，監測並適時阻止國家侵犯人權之虞的法令與政策、推廣人權理念及教育，培訓人權工作者以及參與國際人權組織，交換經驗、相互支援。
TAHR is a member of the International Federation for Human Rights, FORUM-ASIA, the International Detention Coalition, the Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network, the Seafood Working Group, the East Asia Democracy Forum, the East Asian International Tribunal on Evictions, and the Global Committee for the Rule of Law.
