TAONas-LUAD stands for: Therapeutic Antisense Oligonucleotides Targeting NUMB Alternative Splicing in Lung Adenocarcinoma. Here at the TAONas consortium, we are dedicated to providing new and more effective treatments for lung cancer patients with a specific subtype known as lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD).
The objectives of our project are to advance our flagship antisense oligonucleotide (AON) therapy towards the clinic by optimizing its composition and formulation and then testing its safety and efficacy in animals. This way, we hope to prepare it for human trials sometime in 2027. At the same time, we are preparing to spin off a company that will make sure that the treatment has the best chance possible to eventually benefit patients.
The TAONas LUAD consortium is led by the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) of Biomedical Research Park of Barcelona (PRBB). They are supported by IRCM-INSERM (Cancer Research Institute of Montpellier, l'Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale), SINTEF (Stiftelsen for industriell og teknisk forskning) and Inveniam Group. The CRG, in addition to leading the consortium, is in charge of commericalization activities, supported by their Technology and Business Development Office as well as Inveniam. They perform many of the important in vivo experiments of the project and direct the design of the antisense oligonucleotide (AON) technology. INSERM provide their expertise in lung orthotopic xenograft models of LUAD, and SINTEF is concerned with the encapsulation of the AONs in lipid nanoparticles. Together the consortium hopes to produce a novel LUAD AON therapy that modulates RNA splicing.
We expect our therapy to be safe and effective, increasing progression-free survival of patients with LUAD and saving money for health systems. We also hope to establish a company that will continue to exploit splice-modulating AON technology for the benefit of patients with a variety of other cancers in the future.
