The TAWAKI TRUST promotes the conservation of the four species of crested penguins and their habitats throughout their range in Aotearoa/New Zealand, from Fiordland to the subantarctic islands.
The Tawaki Trust is established for the following purposes:
* Implement and support conservation, research, advocacy and education projects related to Crested Penguins;
* Encourage, guide and assist restoration and conservation projects in relation to the Crested Penguins;
* Improve the national and international threat ranking of the Crested Penguins;
* Educate, raise public awareness, and encourage community and stakeholder involvement in relation to the conservation values, protection and preservation of Crested Penguins;
* Facilitate and promote kaitiakitanga with respect to Crested Penguins;
* Promote Crested Penguins as sentinels for changes in the oceans including but not limited to change in climate or commercial fishing practices in the high seas.
