About Thomas Mattern

Marine ecologist with research emphasis on behaviour of seabirds in general and penguins in special. 15 years of experience in planning, leading and executing field work and research projects in New Zealand and Chile. Research focus on foraging ecology, demography and population dynamics, personality traits of seabirds. Secondary research interest development of novel analysis methods and software tools to handle large data sets. Currently working on three research projects. In New Zealand: examining the marine ecology of Fiordland penguins/Tawaki (collaboration with the Global Penguin Society, DOC & West Coast Penguin Trust), identifying behavioural proxies for the identification of super-breeders in Yellow-eyed penguins (in conjunction with Prof Phil Seddon & Dr Yolanda van Heezik). Falkland Islands & Iles Crozet: analysis of long-term activity patterns of prions (collaboration with Prof Petra Quillfeldt, University of Giessen).
