About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.) TEDxUTK in its current form was started in 2014 by a group of curious students who saw the wealth of ideas circulating the University of Tennessee and Knoxville area, and sought to create a central platform to feature local talent and highlight these local ideas worth spreading. TEDxUTK is an annual conference independently organized by students with the support and sponsorship of faculty and staff from across campus. The TEDxUTK team seeks to empower the local community through all aspects of the event for an immersive, local TED-like experience, from the Knoxville-roasted beans that fuel the coffee and conversation breaks to the local hand-printed posters and t-shirts available only at the event. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives.
