For the past several decades the telecom industry has had a problem with innovation. Forward looking individuals in telcos, vendors, regulators, and public policy organizations have struggled with the problem – each somewhat isolated in their organization. TEG provides a ‘place’ where these individuals can come together to work on better understanding the sources of the problem and to pursue paths to solutions.
This has been happening against a background of consolidation and shrinkage amongst the traditional vendors, and declining financial performance in the telcos. At the same time, technology/service/business innovation has been accelerating in other sectors driven in large part by start-ups and companies with large R&D budgets (e.g., hyperscalers). Recently, cloudification, ORAN, and the potential for new entrants with experience building effective innovation ecosystems has made solving the problem more urgent.
