Teledesic planned to build a global, broadband Internet-in-the-Sky® network. Using advanced satellite technology, Teledesic and its partners designed a communications network that enabled cost-effective access to telecommunications services such as computer networking, broadband Internet access, interactive multimedia and high-quality voice. The Teledesic Network was designed to meet the broadband needs of government, business, non-profit organizations, and individuals on a global basis. Teledesic sought to organize a broad, cooperative effort to bring affordable access to advanced information services to rural and remote parts of the world that would not be economic to serve thorough traditional wireline means.
Teledesic's principal shareholders were Craig McCaw, founder of McCaw Cellular Communications, the world's largest wireless communications company before its 1994 merger with AT&T, Bill Gates, co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft Corporation, the world's largest computer software company, Saudi Prince Alaweed bin Talal, The Boeing Co., three Middle Eastern investment groups and Motorola Inc. Teledesic was a private company based in Bellevue, Washington, a suburb of Seattle.
