We focus on two initiatives:
Pad A Girl Initiative- Every girl's dream is to grow up and be like their leading female role model in their life. It could either be their mother, their teacher, their member of parliament, a radio presenter to mention but a few. Unknown to them is that the journey is not as easy as it seems and more so if they come from underserved areas/communities. Adulthood for girls brings the blessing of menstruation, the one aspect that defines us as women.
Girls in underserved communities in Kenya see this as a curse as the cost of sanitary pads is expensive for their parents or guardians to afford. A packet of sanitary pads goes for $1.20 an amount that someone living in a low income community cannot afford since they earn less than $2 per day. These leads to girls trading their dignity(namely going into prostitution or trading sex for a pack of sanitary pads). Lack of sanitary pads leads to lots of girls dropping out of school as girls cannot attend school in their menses out of fear that they will be stigmatised.
Biashara Initiative-We work with young women(aged 20-35yrs) within the informal settlements to give them training and mentorship on how to successfully run their micro businesses. The micro business is one of the markets that has been neglected yet their businesses impact millions of people in the informal settlements. For instance in Nairobi, only 60% of the population live in these settlements-approximately 2.5 million people and depend on these macro & Micro businesses for their daily lives (consumables). Over the past two years we have worked with these women, we have established a great need in running to these micro-businesses where there is a desperate need to get grants /investments as capital to run and expand their businesses.
