About TGI Justice Project

The Mission: The Mission of Transgender Gender-Variant & Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP) is to challenge and end the human rights abuses committed against Black, Black/Brown trans people inside of California prisons, jails, detention centers and beyond. TGIJP builds voice and power and leadership among transgender, gender variant and intersex people–inside and outside of prisons, jails and detention centers–creating a united family in the struggle for survival and freedom centering Black Trans People. TGIJP was founded in 2004 to provide legal services for transgender and gender variant/non-conforming people, in CA prisons, jails and detention centers. In 2005 Alexander Lee, esquire united with Transgender in Prison (TIP) Committee and hired Miss Major Griffin-Gracy to be the organization’s first Executive Director. Since then the TGIJP has grown from it's roots as the Transgender in Prison Committee (an offshoot from the HIV-in-Prison Committee) to a thriving direct service and global advocacy leader in the service of TGI liberation. Since 2015 our current Executive Director, Miss Janetta Johnson, has grown our service structure to include housing and employment support services for TGI people throughout the Bay Area. In 2019 TGIJP began providing outreach and engagement services as the only Black Trans organization in the service provider pool for the City and County of San Francisco’s Homelessness response system. TGIJP now manages Our Trans Homes and provides main stream flexible housing subsidies to over 500 eligible trans participants in San Francisco. TGIJP recently purchased a building that can hold our vision of a Black Trans Cultural Center and political home for TGIJP community members – to ensure Black Trans people had stakes, ownership and stability within the city we helped to build, San Francisco.
