About The Baths Hall & Plowright Theatre

Scunthorpe Theatres manage two entertainment venues in Scunthorpe, The Baths Hall and The Plowright Theatre. Both Venues are managed by North Lincolnshire Council. The Baths Hall is an entertainment venue in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. It hosts many types of entertainment, including live music, dance and comedy. The Scunthorpe building is a former public bath house dating from 1931. It has served as an entertainment venue since the 1970s. It was renovated and reopened in 2005 but closed to undergo a major re-build. It re-opened on the 11 November 2011 with comedian Bill Bailey and guests performing on the opening evening. It can cater for up to 1,000 people seated and 1,800 people with a mixture of seats and standing. Since 2011 the likes of Arcade Fire, Florence and the Machine, Paul Weller, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Kooks, Enter Shikari and Jimmy Carr have performed at the venue. The Plowright Theatre is a live entertainment venue on Laneham Street in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. It is the sister venue to The Baths Hall located on Doncaster Road in Scunthorpe. The Plowright Theatre was commissioned by the former Scunthorpe Borough Council and built by J. W. Taylor in 1958. It is a traditional prosceniumstyle theatre with a 334 seat auditorium. Originally known as Scunthorpe Civic Theatre it was renamed in the 1990s in recognition of the achievements of local actress (late) Joan Plowright who was born in Brigg, educated in Scunthorpe, and was formerly the President of Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club. The club was founded by her father, Bill Plowright, and staged the theatre's first performance, Peer Gynt, in 1958.
