The Foundation for the Developing Person has provided psychotherapeutic training across a range of sectors and in a variety of formats for almost a quarter century.
Set up in 1998 by Jan Hawkins to teach her person-centred approach to counselling, the organisation has worked with leading health, care and educational bodies, as well as a number of charities and universities.
In addition to conventional workplaces, FDP training has been embedded in the emergency services, palliative care, residential homes and the special needs sector. It has also played a role in pioneering new university-accredited courses.
Its main focus is on upskilling professional therapists, student trainees and workplace teams.

The onset of the COVID-19 lockdown, which led to the postponement of the foundation’s yearly catalogue of face to face training, resulted in many of these migrating online to Zoom. As a result, FDP training is now available at competitive rates to clients not only throughout the UK but also from across the world.
In addition to its training arm, the FDP platform also provides therapeutic counselling led by Jan Hawkins herself – for individuals, couples and groups. It reflects Hawkins’ longstanding specialisms, which include services for abuse victims and the disabled.
Other aspects of the FDP offer are its publishing arm and its media consultancy services which have advised, among others, the 2019 BAFTA award-winning film Beast.
