The PHERA Project seeks to further sustainable agriculture and food security through the creation of a whole new industrial sector in Europe. It is envisaged that PHERA will help establish a new industry for mating disruption products for row crop production worth more than €600 million by 2027, creating approximately 300 new jobs.
The PHERA Project is focusing on alternatives to chemical-based pest control in large-scale row crops. Pheromones – the perfumes used by insects to attract each other – can be dispensed in a field to prevent pests from reproducing. Mating Disruption is safe for other insects, animals and humans.
The PHERA consortium aims to scale up pheromone production and application technology towards row crop commercialisation. The consortium uses a new yeast fermentation technology based on renewable raw materials to produce pheromones at industrial scale at a fraction of the cost of current synthetic alternatives.
The PHERA consortium consists of companies specialised in pheromone application, namely SEDQ Healthy Crops (Spain), ISCA Europe (France), Russell IPM (UK) and Novagrica (Greece) as well as in bio-based pheromone production – BioPhero (Denmark). The consortium is supported by scale-up expertise from BPF (Netherlands) and life-cycle assessment capabilities from Fraunhofer (Germany).
This project receives funding from the Horizon 2020 Research & Innovation Programme granted by the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking
The project runs from 2020 to 2022.
