Philosophers have asked these questions for thousands of years and these are the questions The Sacred Path School was established to address. Existentialism is the field of philosophy that considers the nature of existence. The key position of existentialism is that we create our reality through the choices that we make and the way in which we act upon those choices. The authentic being acts from a position of freedom and with pure intent. “It is the act which decides its ends and motives, and the act is the expression of freedom” Jean-Paul Sartre Existentialism is in contrast to the idea of essentialism – that is, that humans have an essential nature. From an existentialist perspective, there is nothing until we create it through the choices that we make and the actions we take. Existentialism is concerned with the nature of existence – not in a theoretical sense but in a real experiential way. The primary vehicle for experiencing reality is the self and the power of individual choice and as such freedom is key. Existentialism is distinct from many abstract metaphysical philosophies in that it is fundamentally concerned with the concrete and the particular, hence, there is always a sense of being concerned with the immediate experience of living in the world, as opposed to simply theorising about it.
