SCARF Refugee Support Overview

SCARF programs support humanitarian refugee entrants to rebuild their lives in Wollongong and the Illawarra. By creating connections and generating opportunities its programs, SCARF helps individuals and families to establish a sense of belonging, experience social and economic inclusion, and access the tools for self-empowerment and independence. Since SCARF’s founding in 2005, more than 2100 people from refugee backgrounds – from 18 different countries of origin (Afghanistan, Burma, Burundi, Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Libya, Pakistan, Palestine, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Syria, Tibet, Togo) – have benefited from one or more of SCARF services. Over 150 volunteers are actively engaged in SCARF services at any one time. In October 2021 SCARF joined forces with the Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra Ltd (MCCI) through an agreed merger in the community’s interest. SCARF will continue to serve the Illawarra’s refugee community and, together with MCCI, work towards creating connections and generating opportunities that build a sense of belonging; promote social and economic inclusion; and empower individuals and families to lead independent lives. Our Vision: Is to see refugee entrants happily settled and participating fully in the life of the wider community.
