About The SUPERNOVA Research Lab
What Is The Supernova Lab? As the director and creator of the Supernova Lab, Dr. Shantesica Gilliam’s lab aims to generate empowerment, voice, and space for historically underserved and neglected populations through advocacy and activism research. We aim to dismantle the inaccurate narratives told in research and medical settings and conduct research that is ethical, reasonable, and accessible. Dr. Shantesica Gilliam uses her expertise in Public Health to further her passion for creating spaces for those historically silenced and neglected in academic, wellness, and reproductive health spaces. The Lab will: • Provide effective resources and programs for underserved populations that disproportionately experience trauma and violence • Develop sexual/ reproductive health and HIV prevention strategies and programs • Examine racism as a public health issue to bridge the research and practice gap by building community partnerships with those who are already doing the work • Conduct advocacy research to understand intersectionality in the maternal and child health setting
