The Sutter Club, founded in 1889, is the second oldest private club in the state of California. Its colorful history began when Sacramento was still little more than a river-dependent town best known as the chief outfitting headquarters for waves of gold-crazed vagabonds and sharpies. The Club moved to its present location in 1930 and has been the site of an endless variety of social gatherings. The building was designed by local architect Charles Dean and is a striking example of early California mission style architecture. It is located in downtown Sacramento, across the street from the State Capitol. There are several fine hotels in the area, including the Sheraton Grand Hotel, the Citizen Hotel, the Embassy Suites, and the Hyatt Regency, all within an easy walking distance from the Club. The Sutter Club is not just a place to enjoy lunch. Rather, the Club has had, and continues to have a very active and diverse calendar of social events. Among the most enduring are the Annual Christmas Ball, Father Daughter Dinner Dance, Rooftop Summer Blowout Party, Past Presidents and Life Member Dinner, Boxing Night, the Huntsman Dinner, Mother's Day and Easter Brunches. In addition, there are special theme dinners, wine dinners, speakers and entertainment scheduled regularly every year. The last Sunday of each month is reserved for Family Night Dinners which includes Bingo, Crab Dinners, Halloween Party, Performers and an occasional traveling petting zoo. Of course, The Sutter Club Christmas Lunches continue to be a highlight of the Club. The availability of the Club's gracious facilities for special events, receptions and wedding parties is an added plus for Club members. There is nothing like The Sutter Club ambiance in Sacramento!
