The York Dialectic Union

The York Dialectic Union is a student-run, non profit society at the University of York that hosts events on the pressing contemporary issues surrounding Politics, Philosophy, Art, Law, Economics, Sociology and more. We host speakers and debates on a variety of topics, bringing in experts to share their trove of knowledge with engaged students at York. Inclusivity and Accessibility is at the heart of our Ideology, shaping the way we create events, foster community and driving our agenda. We reflect these values in the pricing for our events and membership of the society, in the events we host and the speakers we welcome, and in the culture we foster and the students we attract. We act as a forum for all ideas to be heard and challenged, no matter the position on the political spectrum. We have welcomed guests with a rich diversity of ideologies. Last year, this included, former Leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, former Deputy Leader of Reform UK, Ben Habib, former Cabinet Minister and Shadow Chancellor, Lord Lilley, and will include former leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett. However, we are not an exclusively Political Union, we host speakers with an idea to spread or a story to tell, guests from all walks of life are welcome. Last year’s events included talks on women in cinema, a Jihadist’s process of deradicalisation, and an 18 year old’s journey to reach the top of Everest.
