Thin Film Technology is a research group at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and one of the international outstanding address and Research Partner in Coating & Drying of Thin Films with one of the most modern coating, printing and drying laboratories worldwide. TFT was founded at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in 2009 to meet the growing demand for thin film processing research in Germany in the area of functional films with applications in future battery technologies, printed electronics, fuel cells and electrolyser, optical foils, membranes, adhesives, biosensors and functional coatings and printings. The Professorship "Thin Film Technology" was initiated within the “KIT- Elite Future Concept I” in 2009 and was co-funded by an industry consortium of BAYER, BASF and ROCHE as a "Shared Professorship" for 5 years. Head of TFT are Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Wilhelm Schabel and Dr.-Ing. Philip Scharfer. TFT offers doctoral students and graduate students an excellent framework for theoretical and experimental research work with the aim of understanding the film process technology for future and modern applications particularly in energy, environmental friendly and sustainable research thanks to outstanding and particularly unique expertise in this field. The TFT is strongly connected to research partners, an Excellence Cluster in Ulm and Heidelberg and many Competence clusters. In joint projects with industrial partners, the TFT develops solutions for a wide range of topics in thin Film processing and technology research with a view on technology on sustainable materials for the processes of tomorrow.
