UCSD Timber Design Team

The UCSD Timber Design Team is a student-led organization dedicated to advancing sustainable construction practices through timber-based projects. Each year, we compete in the ASCE Timber-Strong Design Build Competition, where we design and build a two-story light-frame wood structure that meets strict criteria for strength, functionality, and aesthetics. Our team is divided into specialized subteams to ensure efficiency and creativity. The Design Team creates structural plans that meet industry standards and optimize performance. The Construction Team oversees assembly with a focus on precision and safety. The Aesthetics Team enhances the structure’s visual appeal and promotes sponsors. The Management Team handles finances, sponsorships, social media, and event coordination. Through hands-on projects, members develop practical skills in wood design, structural analysis, and project management, applying classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. We collaborate with industry advisors and sponsors, gaining mentorship and exposure to professional practices. Beyond competition, we promote timber as a sustainable, renewable building material, advocating its environmental and structural benefits in modern construction. Our mission is to inspire innovation and leadership in the next generation of engineers, contributing to the future of sustainable design.
