Strengthening capacity and advocacy for inclusive and rights-based social protection is increasingly critical to promote economic and social reform processes across countries in a manner that advances social justice and can strengthen social contracts. Recognizing this need, the UN Issue Based Coalition on Social Protection in MENA (co-led by ILO and UNICEF) set as a joint-UN objective for 2020-2021 the launch of a Regional Capacity building initiative on Social Protection. Recognizing the quality and impact of the TRANSFORM initiative in Africa, partners agreed to create an adapted, region-specific package for social protection capacity development in the Arab region.
Since 2020, key steps have been undertaken to lay the foundations for a sustainable and impactful TRANSFORM Arab Region initiative. A TRANSFORM Arab Region Advisory Group (AG) was created including ILO, UNICEF, ESCWA, UNDP and WFP regional offices to advise and support the development of the initiative based on social protection trends and training needs of respective stakeholders in the Arab region. The initiative is currently coordinated jointly through a regional hub by ILO and UNICEF.
