Traditional consulting tends to result in the production of a report collated by a Principal containing recommendations of actions the client should undertake. There is more money to be made in short term consulting and standardised report generation than in longer term implementation services unless the brunt of that work is provided through relatively junior staff with nominal oversight by seniors. The response of large clients is therefore to hand consultants’ recommendations over to internal project teams for implementation; most SME’s don’t have that luxury. Their leadership are already fully engaged with their day jobs and the firm may not have the resources to pay the external consultancies to actually implement the recommendations fully.
