Transgender India

In India, transgender people are seen as sub-human. Cultural taboo and centuries of marginalization has left transgender people disenfranchised and exposed to human rights abuses. There are hardly any resources to learn about the complex journey of gender transition in Indian context. Being misinformed makes Transgender people very vulnerable. As a last resort, many become victims of human trafficking. Trans people who speak English have had the opportunity to understand gender Transition through internet and thereby attain more bodily autonomy. But this is not the case for people who do not know English. Transgender India TV uses YouTube to spread awareness through fun and witty educational shows and expert talks in Hindi, that empower transgender people to understand gender transition. We cover social/ medical/legal transition, body image issues and economic empowerment. We produce the shows in collaboration with subject matter experts like doctors, lawyers, activists & HR consultants. We also started the first ever trans-specific online discussion forum in India called “TALK”, which allows trans-people around the country to question and discuss issues about gender, life, career, and transition. “TALK” helps establish people-to-people connection between transgender people who are otherwise often isolated.
