Trr 318 "Constructing Explainability" company information, Employees & Contact Information

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an integral part of our digital society: it creates individual exercise plans, examines X-ray images and evaluates evidence material. The basis for such processes is algorithmic decision-making. However, technical explanations often presuppose knowledge about how AI works and are difficult to comprehend. In the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre “Constructing Explainability” (TRR 318), researchers are exploring how to integrate users in explanatory processes. The interdisciplinary research team consists of scientists from the Bielefeld and Paderborn Universities from the fields of linguistics, psychology, media science, sociology, philosophy, economics and computer science. They investigate the principles, mechanisms, and social practices of explanation and how these can be incorporated into the design of AI systems. The goal of the project is to make explanatory processes more intelligible and to create easily understandable assistive systems.
