About u-Care Project

Funded by the EPSRC under the “Healthcare technologies for 2050” call, u-Care aims to harness deep ultraviolet light for clinical applications as well as creating microscale catheters for the distal lung. u-Care is based between Heriot-Watt University, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Bath. We aim to utilise deep UV light for precision ablation in the brain and directed treatment of microbial keratitis in the eye. We are creating economical and compact light sources for the deep UV to be able to robustly and routinely generate deep UV using novel hollow core fibres in medical practice. We are also developing robotic controlled tools for repeatable drug delivery, sampling, imaging, sensing, and extraction in the distal lung, using precision engineering to create the nanoscale components.
