About UA Metallurgical & Matls. Engineering Dept.
Metallurgical engineering includes studying the science behind metals and applying those principles to everyday problems, such as selecting the alloy necessary to produce rust-resistant stove tops all the way to choosing which metal is best suited for rocket engines as they endure high temperatures. Metals are constantly around us and metallurgical engineers make sure those metals do their job! Studies within metallurgical engineering include studying mechanical, thermal, optical, chemical, and electrical properties of metallic elements. Corrosion, physical metallurgy, welding, and thermodynamics of materials are some of the topics of study here at UA that helps prepare the next generation of metallurgical engineers to have jobs in aerospace, naval, manufacturing, medical, chemical, and automotive industries post-graduation (just to name a few!). Here at UA, students have the opportunity to take classes on a wider range of materials such as polymers and composites to understand general properties about different types of materials besides metals. Materials science is a very interdisplinary field and our department loves to collaborate with neighboring fields of study such as Chemical Engineering, Physics, and more!
